What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable medication formulated from a type of bacteria called Clostridium botulinum, a substance found naturally in soil, forests, and lakes. This substance is also a neurotoxin, and when injected into muscle tissue, it prevents the muscle from contracting.

Botox is used in numerous medical applications, including treating migraine, severe underarm sweating, and even overactive bladder. In aesthetic applications, it’s approved for temporarily reducing the appearance of crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead lines.

Jeuveau® is a similar injectable medication made from the same neurotoxin as Botox. Jeuveau is approved for use in treating frown lines, which are the vertical lines that develop between your eyebrows. Both Botox and Jeuveau can be used off-label to treat other areas of the face.

How does Botox work?

Botox works by preventing the treated muscle tissue from going through its full range of motion. That means the targeted facial muscles won’t be able to pull your skin into lines, folds, and wrinkles. The skin covering the treatment area remains smooth, giving you a more youthful appearance.

It takes multiple injections to treat each area. That said, your practitioner delivers the injections quickly, so you don’t have to set aside a significant amount of time to come in for Botox treatments. There’s no need for advance preparation or recovery time, and you can get back to your day in well under an hour.

How long do the results of Botox last?

After your injections, it takes 24-48 hours for the results to develop. You can expect those results to last around four months. At that point, your lines and wrinkles slowly begin returning.

You can decide if you’d like to extend your results with another round of injections. If there are minor changes you want to make, let your practitioner know. Administering more or less of the medication can alter the results.

Some people choose to have Botox in preparation for a big event like a wedding or reunion. Others make Botox injections part of their ongoing aesthetics care routine.
